The Care Routine That Protects Your Gold Finish

Care Is the Key: How to Make PVD Gold-Plating Last Longer

PVD gold-plating is designed for durability, but longevity still comes down to one thing: how you treat the surface day to day. Most “plating wear” isn’t mysterious—it’s a predictable mix of friction, residue, and everyday chemicals.

If you want your gold tone to stay crisp and polished, these fundamentals matter more than anything else.

1) Last on, first off

This one rule prevents most premature dulling.

  • Apply skincare, perfume, hair products first
  • Let skin fully dry
  • Put jewelry on last
  • Remove it first before showering, gym, cleaning, or sleep

2) Keep it clean—without over-cleaning

PVD doesn’t need aggressive cleaning. It needs consistent gentle care.

  • After wear: wipe with a soft microfiber cloth
  • If needed: mild soap + lukewarm water, rinse quickly, dry fully
Avoid polishing compounds, abrasive cloths, and “jewelry dip” formulas that aren’t designed for plated finishes.

3) Store pieces separately

A large amount of “scratching” happens off the wrist—inside drawers, handbags, or travel pouches.

  • Store each piece in its own pouch or compartment
  • Keep away from humidity (bathrooms are the worst storage spot)
  • Prevent metal-on-metal contact, especially when stacking

4) Know what to avoid

The most common finish killers are:

  • chlorine and pool chemicals
  • saltwater deposits
  • hand sanitizer and harsh detergents
  • abrasive surfaces

PVD is strong—but no finish enjoys repeated chemical exposure or abrasion.

Bottom line: The finish lasts when the routine is consistent. Care isn’t extra—it’s the difference between “looks new” and “looks tired.”
